Formal Debate on Security

This is a reminder that the Hart House Debates Committee is holding a formal debate on the resolution: "This House Would Fight the War on Terror without sacrificing Civil Liberties", this Wednesday, September 26. The event will commence at 7:00 PM in the Debates Room at Hart House. The guest speaker will be U of T professor Kent Roach.

Kent Roach is Prichard-Wilson Chair of Law and Public Policy at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and of Yale. In recent years, Professor Roach has specialized in anti-terrorism law and policy and is the co-editor of The Security of Freedom: Essays on Canada's Anti-Terrorism Bill and Global Anti-Terrorism Law and Policy.

Hope to see you there!

***CALLING ALL NOVICE DEBATERS***

NOVICE TRAINING DAY, SAT 22ND SEPTEMBER

Welcome to Hart House Debate Club!

As part of our introductory debating activities we are hosting a Novice Training Day, on Saturday 22nd September in Sidney Smith Hall (located at 100 St George St, just south of Harbord St). The training day is basically an introduction to what debating is, how you debate, and a chance for you to have a go yourself! There will be a series of seminars given by some of our top pro debaters and show rounds so you can see debates in action. It is a great learning experience, both for those of you who are completely new to debate, AND for those who debated in high school.

The day will kick off around 12pm in room 621 of Sid Smith and we’ll be providing you with a FREE lunch around 1-1.30ish. Hope to see you there!

NOVICE DEBATERS HART HOUSE FARM TRIP, SAT 22ND SEPTEMBER

As if a whole novice training day wasn’t enough, HHDC is also organising a awesome trip to Hart House Farm for 33 novice debaters, leaving 4pm Saturday 22nd September from Sid Smith (straight from the Novice Training Day), and returning around 1pm Sunday 23rd September.

Hart House owns a quaint farm about a two-hour coach ride outside the city. It’s a great place for groups like ours to go for a night, go hiking, go to the outdoor sauna, or just chill out on the farm itself. HHDC is covering the cost of the farm and transport there and back. All we would like from those going is a contribution of $8 to cover dinner that night and breakfast the following morning. (There will be food options to cover all people’s tastes!)

SIGNING UP FOR THE TRIP:

Sign-up for the trip will be open during the Tuesday (7pm) and Wednesday (4pm) debating practices, with 17 spots open on Tuesday and 16 open on Wednesday. Sign-up sheets will be passed round during the meeting, and by the end of the meeting if there are more people than there are spaces available then I will draw names from a hat. Those people who are confirmed as leaving at the meeting will then need to give me $8 so I can get food before Saturday.

That’s a lot of information to digest but the essentials are:

  • Come to the Novice Training Day on Saturday 22nd September at Sidney Smith Hall. Its great for everyone, both complete novices and high school debaters
  • Want to go to Hart House Farm? Sign up at next week’s Tuesday (7pm) or Wednesday (4pm) meetings. Just bring your lovely selves and $8 deposit for food.

Looking forward to meeting you all!

First Meeting(s)

Just a reminder that the first two meetings will be held in the upcoming week. Tuesday the 11th at 7pm and Wednesday the 12th at 4pm. The meetings will be held in Hart House; the porter can direct you to the proper room.

It is not necessary to attend both meetings; however, you should attend one of the first two meetings in order to not miss any training workshops.
